The question of what eCommerce platform to use (or migrate to) is always a really tough decision for any business to make, even moreso at the enterprise end of the market (where you have a lot more budget at stake, more stakeholders involved etc). Enterprise eCommerce solutions don’t come cheap and they require a huge amount of time (and a lot of people) to implement, run and maintain. This is why it’s fundamentally important that you remain highly organised and systematic in your research and decision-making process, as selecting the wrong platform can have a huge impact on your business (both short-term and long-term).

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been working on a BigCommerce project for one of my longest-standing clients – which is essentially a new store that services some of their B2B customers. I recommended BigCommerce for this project because it met a lot of the requirements with its native feature-set and the TCO and speed to market were lower than using the existing Magento store (or other platforms).

BigCommerce is primarily an SMB and mid-market SaaS eCommerce platform with a sizeable market share in these areas in North America and over 80,000 users, globally.

Over the last 12-18 months, the demand for SaaS-based eCommerce platforms has sky-rocketed, with benefits in scale, cost-of-ownership, reduced platform maintenance & management overheads being some of the biggest drivers. Platforms like Salesforce Commerce Cloud have been a prominent SaaS option in the mid-market for a number of years, but in more recent times they’ve been challenged by the likes of BigCommerce and Shopify Plus. This article is focused on Shopify Plus and BigCommerce, which have both seen considerable growth over the last 12 months, in different areas.

Whilst SaaS (software-as-a-service) software has been enthusiastically taken up across various sectors over the last decade, it’s only in more recent times that enterprise eCommerce platform options have been made available to retailers. The SME end of the retail market may have been well served with cloud-based SaaS solutions, with the obvious ones being Shopify and BigCommerce, however, it’s taken longer for most of the enterprise platforms to enter this space, with the exception of Demandware / Salesforce Commerce Cloud.
