How to Improve Meta Catalogue Ad Performance in Lower Budget Markets by Using Country Override Feeds

Advertising on Meta can be challenging for brands in smaller markets with limited testing budgets. To optimise catalogue sale ads, it’s essential to streamline your approach in order to enhance conversions, sales, and ROAS.

One effective strategy is using country override feeds, which allows brands to consolidate their efforts into a single product catalogue. This not only simplifies campaign management but also maximises ad spend efficiency through Meta’s advanced algorithms.

By consolidating campaigns, leveraging country override feeds, and tailoring strategies for lower-budget markets, brands can see more success in these challenging regions. So how can you optimise your catalogue sale ads with country override feeds?

Common challenges with smaller markets

For brands operating in emerging markets where performance marketing budgets can be lower, splitting your efforts across multiple campaigns and catalogues for each country can lead to fragmented learning, reduced efficiency, and underutilised budget.

A highly effective way to optimise catalogue sale ad performance in these markets is by doing the following:

  1. Consolidating this smaller scale activity into one campaign.
  2. Using country override feeds in a single product catalogue instead of creating a separate catalogue and campaign (a DPA or DABA campaign can only use one catalogue) for each separate market.

Why is campaign consolidation so important?

Consolidating campaigns on Meta allows you to maximise budget efficiency and leverage Meta’s algorithm more effectively. Meta’s machine learning thrives on volume and quality of data. If your account structure is too thin, you dilute the data available to Meta and hinder the learning process.

When a brand advertises in smaller markets, creating multiple campaigns with separate catalogues using primary feeds for each country can result in:

  1. Smaller Data Pools: Each campaign or market will have less data to work with, making it harder for Meta’s algorithms to effectively optimise your ad performance.
  2. Budget Fragmentation: With a number of campaigns, your budget gets divided across markets, reducing the ad spend you deliver per campaign. Smaller campaigns often struggle with delivery and optimisation, resulting in weaker performance and higher CPMs.
  3. Limited Learnings: Running campaigns with limited reach and scope reduces the speed and volume of learnings. Meta’s algorithm will take longer to identify successful strategies when your campaigns are split in this way, leading to less immediate results and inefficient use of your advertising budget.

What are country override feeds?

Country override feeds allow you to create a single product catalogue using your primary feed data while overriding specific product information (such as product price, currency, URL, and availability) for your chosen markets where the product attributes will differentiate.

In essence, you can customise your product catalogue to reflect market-specific attributes for different countries. Below is a typical CSV override example of columns we might want to override for the German market for one product (add products per row and product attributes to override per column).

So here we want to override for a certain ID the availability of the product (in or out of stock), the price and sale price if applicable in euros, its website link and image_link.

You can find Meta’s data feed fields and specifications here.

What are the benefits of using country override feeds in a single catalogue?

Simplified campaign management

Managing a single catalogue with country overrides is a lot simpler and makes navigation way easier than handling multiple catalogues. You only need to maintain one primary feed, and any product changes (such as product availability or sale prices) can be easily managed by updating your override feeds.

This approach reduces the risk of issues like mismatched product data across different catalogues. It also saves time and decreases the complexity of your advertising structure which is especially important if you are new to advertising or managing campaigns with limited resources.

Consolidated campaigns and budgets

By using country override feeds in one catalogue, you can consolidate all your markets into a single catalogue sales campaign. This allows you to focus your entire budget on a larger campaign with broader reach, enabling Meta’s algorithm to optimise more efficiently and cost-effectively.

With a larger, unified budget, Meta can also spend more effectively based on market performance, delivering ads where they’re most likely to convert. If you do not have market specific budgets and your primary goal is ROAS maximisation, this approach is ideal.

Increased data volume and faster learnings

When all your performance data feeds into one campaign, Meta’s algorithm benefits from a broader dataset, allowing it to learn faster and optimise more efficiently. The end result of this again is a stronger platform performance.

Larger, consolidated datasets enable Meta to identify patterns and trends across your advertising markets that may not be as detectable in smaller, fragmented campaigns. These insights ultimately lead to faster optimisation of creative, placements, and audience targeting delivery.

How to set up country override feeds in a Meta catalogue:

1. Create a Primary Feed: This is the base feed that will include all the essential product information like name, description, and images. Add this as your catalogues main data source.

2. Set Up Overrides: Under country and language feeds, you can set up country-specific overrides to customise product details (such as price, currency, or availability) for different markets.

You can double check the correct country data is populating by clicking into an item in your catalogue and navigating to the international coverage tab. This will show you all the override data Meta has available per product.

3. Consolidate Campaigns: Once these steps are completed, you can create a Dynamic Ad campaign that targets all of your desired countries. Then choose the relevant catalogue and Meta will automatically use the correct product information for each country based on the override data you have provided.

Final thoughts

Switching to a consolidated approach using country override feeds can significantly enhance your advertising impact in smaller markets.

By streamlining your campaign management and leveraging the full potential of Meta’s algorithms, you can improve performance and ensure your budget is utilised effectively.

In considering this strategy, focus on these key aspects:

  • Consolidate your dynamic activity by using country override feeds in your product catalogue to optimise performance across smaller markets.
  • Reduce budget fragmentation by running a single consolidated campaign, allowing you to consolidate your ad spend and exit learning quicker.
  • Utilise Meta’s machine learning to its full potential by feeding a larger dataset, enabling better, faster optimisation.
  • Simplify your account management by using one product catalogue for all markets, while still catering to local needs with country-specific overrides.
